The Fiends page

This is a page of our fiends - I mean, "friends" - who have their own hosted horror shows. I encourage you to vists their shows and show them all your support.

Every horror host who is online owes a debt to Dick Dyszel/Count Gore de Vol. Dick was a horror host (as well as Bozo and Captain 20 in the afternoon.) After hosting horror movies in the Washington/Baltimore markets from 1973 to 1987, Count Gore De Vol became the first horror host with a weekly show on the Internet in 1998! This weekly journey into Gore’s domain features streaming video of movies and shorts hosted by The Count, and interviews with celebrities. There’s also book reviews and recommendations by The Tomb Keeper, video reviews by former protige Dr. Sarcofiguy and Butch and Joan Cleaver, media reviews by A. Ghastlee Ghoul, original fiction, regular contests, movie reviews and what ever strange and evil creations that come to mind. Count Gore de Vol's name is either a play on the name of acerbic author Gore Vidal or the name of a prominant Washington D.C. funeral home, "De Vol." Even his mortal portrayer, Dick Dyszel, is unsure of the real story.

Cassandra Peterson as Elvira
Ah, I can't forget the lady who put the boob back into boob tube. The ever delightful Cassandra Peterson as Elvira. Back in 1981, who could have imagined the hostess of a local Horror movie show would become a household name? Elvira was the first horror host ever to be syndicated nationally and has emerged as one of today’s most original and outrageous pop culture icons. The show featured B movies, particularly those in the horror and science fiction genres, and is hosted by Elvira, a character with a black dress and heaven bump hairstyle, played by Cassandra Peterson. Elvira occasionally interrupts the films with comments and jokes, and in some episodes receives phone calls from a character called "the Breather" (John Paragon). Peterson's Elvira character rapidly gained notice with her tight-fitting, low-cut, cleavage-displaying black gown. Adopting the flippant tone of a California "Valley girl", she brought a satirical, sarcastic edge to her commentary. She reveled in dropping risqué double entendres and making frequent jokes about her cleavage. In an AOL Entertainment News interview, Peterson said, "I figured out that Elvira is me when I was a teenager. She's a spastic girl. I just say what I feel and people seem to enjoy it." Her camp humor, sex appeal, and good-natured self-mockery made her popular with late-night movie viewers and her popularity soared. My goodness, I remember when her show, Movie Macarbe, was on the TV. I remember those really bad risqué double entendres. I remember how much I laughed at her act. I remember the time she was a featured VJ on MTV for Halloween. I've loved Elvira since the first time I saw her. I think her show was where I first saw Attack of the Killer Tomatoes.

An old hero of mine. Svengoolie is/was an American hosted horror movie television character. Svengoolie showed horror and science fiction films and is hosted by the character Svengoolie, who was originally played by Jerry G. Bishop. Before and after commercial breaks, Svengoolie presents sketches, tells jokes, and performs parody songs related to the films being aired. The show's title, Screaming Yellow Theater, was derived from Screaming Yellow Zonkers, a yellow, sugary glazed popcorn snack, first produced in the 1960s. Svengoolie was a pun on the name Svengali + ghoul. The show, and character, proved to be wildly successful; the show lasted from 1970 until 1973, when parent company Field Communications sold WFLD-TV to Kaiser Broadcasting, which chose to replace Theater with a similar show popular in Cleveland, The Ghoul Show. Before and after commercial breaks, Svengoolie would present sketches, tells jokes, and performs parody songs related to the films being aired. I don't know what it is about people who make really bad jokes, puns and double entendres (I think it has something to do with watching the Marx Bros. from an early age. You kids think you know what comedy is.), but so many of my heroes do.

Danielle Gelehrter as Penny Dreadful XIII
Danielle Gelehrter created the persona of Penny Dreadful the witch in an effort to revive the concept of a horror movie host on Boston-area television. The show, Penny Dreadful’s Shilling Shockers, began production in August 2005 and premiered on local cable in January 2006. Shilling Shockers first aired on Public-access television cable TV in Providence, Rhode Island; Boston, Massachusetts; New Bedford, Massachusetts; and Salem, Massachusetts. With her sidekicks, Garou (a werewolf portrayed by Danielle's late husband Magoo Gelehter), (Dr. Manfred Von Bulow (portrayed by Ivan Bernier), and Luna (portrayed by series' director, Rebecca Paiva), Penny Dreadful's Shilling Shockers was a supurb mixture of public access films, insane sketches and wonderful humor, even showing silent films. Penny Dreadful's Shilling Shockers was eventually shown on over 200 cities and towns throughout the six New England states. Danielle's show was (and still is) one of my favorite hosted horror shows. Danielle has settled into doing a wonderful podcast called Terror at Collingwood for all the fans of the show Dark Shadows.

John Dimes (born January 27, 1966) is an American author, artist, singer, actor and award-winning comedian. He is best known as the horror host Dr. Sarcofiguy, the first (and still only) African-American horror host. In addition to this, Dimes has written several novels, such as the graphic novel Tales of Home, the surreal thriller Coincidissonance and the mockumentary guidebook The White Corpse Hustle: A Guide for the Fledgeling Vampire, which has been favorably compared to the writings of Douglas Adams.[citation needed] This is the first of a planned trilogy. Outside of his illustrations for his novels, Dimes' artwork has been showcased in Washington, D.C. galleries. Dimes began performing as a stand-up comedian, working alongside David Chapelle, Patton Oswalt and Wanda Sykes. He has appeared in several independent films, including the satire The Blair Bitch Project (1999) and the documentaries The Wave (1996) and American Scary (2006), which screened at the 2007 San Diego Comic Con. In 1995 John sang on the stage of the Apollo Theatre, and later that same year, Halloween 1995, his program, The Spooky Movie, debuted on Falls Church Community TV (formerly "Channel 38"), where it continues to run every Friday night.

Dr. Gangrene is a television horror host based in the Middle Tennessee area, played by actor/writer/producer Larry Underwood. Underwood was inspired to create the character as an homage to Sir Cecil Creape, a former Nashville horror host. Created in 1999, the show was originally a half hour Public-access television cable TV program called Chiller Cinema in Hendersonville, Tennessee. The first episode aired July 1, 1999 on the Hendersonville, TN Public-access television station. The show quickly expanded into Nashville, TN where it aired on Community Access Channel 19. Chiller Cinema was the first program to broadcast live out of the new Public, Educational, and Government Access television building where CH 19 broadcast from. Chiller Cinema was soon seen on other Public-access television stations across the country, making Underwood one of the first horror hosts to self-syndicate his program. The show won much praise and accolades and was named one of the country's top 20 cable access TV programs by Gear Magazine. The show moved to Nashville's WB affiliate WNAB in 2005, and was renamed The WB58 Creature Feature, expanding to a two-hour format showing horror and Sci-Fi movies. Underwood later changed the name slightly to The CW58 Creature Feature to match WNAB's switchover from The WB to The CW in September 2006. In 2008, Dr. Gangrene appeared in a series of Public Service Announcements entitled Go Green With Dr. Gangrene. The initial three shorts were entitled "Bonehead", "Two Lane Trash Stop", and "Trash Day Of The Dead". The shorts were written by Cameron McCasland and Larry Underwood and directed by Cameron McCasland. The series went on to win several local and national awards, including an Emmy Nomination for McCasland, and citations from the Governor of Tennessee Phil Bredesen, and the Nashville City Council. In the 2008 Rondo Awards the PSAs were awarded a special Rondo Award in The Rondo Hatton Classic Horror Awards called "The Vasaria Public Service Rondo Award."
Dr. Gangrene was inducted into the Official Horror Host Hall of Fame in 2015.

Karen Scioli as Stella, the Man-Eater From Manayunk
Saturday Night Dead was a television program that hosted B horror films on KYW-TV, Channel 3, at that time the NBC affiliate in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The program aired at 1:00am directly following Saturday Night Live, from September 29, 1984 to late October 1990, comprising 141 episodes. The show was a cult favorite from the start, with Karen Scioli winning a local acting Emmy in 1985. The program was hosted by Stella, dubbed "the Man-Eater From Manayunk" (a section near the Schuylkill River, a working-class neighborhood) and the "Daughter of Desire". Stella’s haunted condo was a playground for celebrities and comics including John Zacherle (aka "Roland"), Jane "Pixanne" Norman, Bill "Wee Willie" Webber, Rip Taylor, Sally Starr, Bobby Rydell, Robert Hazard, Channel 3’s anchors, reporters, weather people, and many local comics and Philadelphia icons. Stella delighted in half-clad, gorgeous young men and often had one or two hanging in her dungeon awaiting her pleasure. According to her biography, Stella was "born in North Libido, New Jersey, a small village outside of Atlantic City. She is the only child of traveling hecklers. Her parents dropped her in a plastic basket at Fifth and Shunk in front of Guido's Hair Weaving and Plumbing Supplies, but for all intents and purposes she was raised by a flock of pigeons." Reincarnated 37 times, Stella was just your typical "ghoul" next door. Stella was portrayed by Karen Scioli, a South Philadelphia-born actress, writer and homemaker who weekly donned a push-up bra, slinky black dress, feather boa, false eyelashes, and a mole on her right cheek. As clarified by Scioli in the 2006 documentary film American Scary, Stella was not a vampiress or monster, she was instead a traditional, non-supernatural vamp. In 2012, Scioli/"Stella" was inducted into the Horror Host Hall of Fame.
